Hazards in Drain and Sewer Cleaning

Often when a drain is clogged, a client at first will attempt to de-clog the drain on their own. While some clients opt for the traditional plunger in an effort to de-clog and alleviate the problem, others resolve to more extreme methods such as inserting projectiles or pouring down chemical agents that harm pipes and get stuck in the plumbing system.

Previously it was easier to determine what kind of drain opener was used and how dangerous it could be. Today however due to the multiple products available, a plumber has no idea what they will encounter on the job. The most common acids used in chemical drain openers are sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. The most common caustics are sodium hydroxide caustic soda and lye. Both acids and caustics (bases) are dangerous and can cause injury or death. Acids are usually more dangerous and life threatening than caustics because they are powerful enough to produce violently explosive reactions. If an acid is poured into a drain containing a caustic a violent reaction can be created repelling the acid. The reaction is called a splash back.

Unfortunately, even the most cautious of plumbers at one point or another will be harmed when chemical agents are used. There is a possibility they may develop a rash, inhale poisonous fumes or suffer from skin burns. Such scenarios occur in cases when the client has failed to inform the plumber that they used chemical agents. Please be responsible and honest with your plumber if you have used chemical de-clogging agents prior to their arrival.
